Back and to the future

Doyle

What will you be doing 20 years from now?

Can't really say for sure, can you?

What were you doing 20 years ago?

That's no doubt easier to recall, and it was probably something far removed from what you're doing today.

Twenty years doesn't sound like that long of a time, until the question's called. Then you realize just how much can change in two decades.

That's what writers for this issue of Wisconsin Builder did - they called the questions. They asked a pertinent few in the construction industry to look back to 1983 to get a glimpse of the past through their eyes. Then they queried a few others about what 2023 will look like.

And as the past 20 years have transformed the industry, expect the same to happen in the 20 to come, our seers said.

For instance, writer Mark Kass learns that construction trailers will by 2023 look more like high-tech corporate centers, where computers will keep superintendents in constant communications with architects and designers through e-mail, chat rooms or video conferencing.

And writer Seth Ansorge takes a look at the skilled-labor shortage then and now, only to learn that the need for workers will continue to grow and grow and grow.

How will individual firms change? Writer Jeremy Harrell talked to CG Schmidt's Craig Capano for an answer to that question. Check out that Q&A to learn how what Capano characterizes as one-stop shopping may transform the way you're doing business.

Join us in our journey to the past and future; we hope you enjoy the trip.
