ASA set for a busy year

By John Knier
LaForce Inc.

KnierThe American Subcontractors Association of Greater Milwaukee is pleased to be a part of this special section of The Daily Reporter. Chartered in 1986, our Greater Milwaukee chapter association represents more than 110 subcontractors, suppliers and service providers in southeastern Wisconsin. We are one of more than 50 chapters nationwide.

Our mission is to promote professionalism, education and fair business practices in the construction industry. Within this special section, our members have provided a sampling of topics that help describe who we are and what issues concern us.

Our organization has just completed a successful 15th year, hosting workshops and speakers on topics such as lien law requirements, negotiating contracts, developing a business plan and city of Milwaukee development ideas, to name a few.

On the legislative front, we made progress in reforming retainage laws to bring these requirements in line with current practices. It appears that Wisconsin will soon join several other states in either reducing or eliminating retainage on construction draws.

To finish our year, we recognized Hunzinger Construction and Plunkett Raysich with outstanding contractor and architect awards at our annual banquet.

Look forward

For the upcoming year, we have planned an exciting slate of meetings and workshops. To start the year, our kickoff dinner meeting on Sept. 25 will feature a speech on the tight labor market and what businesses can do about it. We will also have several members of a prominent general contractor present to discuss their company and what projects they are bidding on. Other events during the year will include a bidding workshop, a presentation on the Marquette Interchange proposal and a speaker explaining how to develop a marketing plan for your business.

Legislatively, we will continue our work to prohibit unfair indemnification and insurance clauses, reform Wisconsin’s construction lien law to make it clearer and simplify the sales tax laws related to the purchase of construction materials by tax-exempt entities.

We look forward to working with other construction associations to accomplish these goals. All in all, I expect that the upcoming year will be a winner. If you have any questions about our organization or would like to join, please feel free to contact us at 414-276-1743.
