Our mission

To advance the merit-shop construction industry

ABC's School-to-Career program builds interest in the trades Associated Builders & Contractors of Wisconsin, through the ABC Careers in Construction Committee, is reaching out to high-school students and educators to tell them about the lucrative and rewarding careers in the construction industry.

Demand for skilled workers triples

Fueling ABC's School-to-Career program is that the demand for skilled workers has tripled in the last 50 years.Technical colleges have indicated that the latest trend is reverse transfers, whereby people with four-year degrees (those people who thought they had to go to college to get a good job) are going back for one- or two-year degrees or apprenticeship programs. Innovative school boards are now asking, "How many students have career plans?" instead of, "How many students are going on to college?" Young people are becoming managers of their education and work lives and employers are working together to enhance the opportunities for choice and content. Those industries that ignore what's going on in the high schools are being left high and dry when it comes to recruiting prospective employees.

Integrating construction curriculum with on-the-job training gives students real-world experience. ABC Wisconsin continues to help high schools around the state implement the Wheels of Learning construction curriculum with an on-the-job training program that prepares students for going directly into the work force or continuing their training with a construction apprenticeship program. Whether in a summer school work program or part-time work experience during the school year, students get the chance to explore the real world of construction.

ABC nails down partnership with skills USA/VICA

For several years ABC Wisconsin has been an enthusiastic supporter of Skills USA/VICA, a student organization for career-training programs with more than 80 chapters in Wisconsin high schools and more than 245,000 student members nationwide. ABC Wisconsin members have served as judges for the state residential wiring, masonry, cabinetmaking and carpentry contests. ABC National recently became a sponsor of the industrial motor controls contest at the national Skills USA/VICA leadership and skills conference.

Web page offers interactive construction career path

The Associated General Contractors of Greater Milwaukee understands the importance of construction safety and its relationship to the bottom line. As a result, we operate a full-service safety program for our members' use. Staffed with a safety director and an associate safety director, we provide information and interpretation on all safety issues. We also provide research and consultation on all OSHA, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Agency regulations. When necessary, we will have our safety director provide advocacy and defend your interests as a member of AGC-GM at meetings and conferences regarding safety citations, (e.g. OSHA).

Our safety program provides members with an abundance of publications, videos, OSHA 10-hour course training and emergency first-aid training and CPR. It also sponsors numerous seminars on safety and related topics. Additionally, we sponsor Annual Safety Day, including accredited seminars and workshops on emerging safety issues, and we also provide specialized model safety programs on such topics as hazard communication and lead and asbestos abatement. We are committed to providing the highest quality and most timely information on matters associated with safety.

Another unique cost-saving benefit of membership is our Rent-a-Safety-Director program. For those companies that do not have qualified safety personnel on the job site, this AGC-GM benefit allows you, for a members-only fee, to have AGC-GM's associate safety director inspect your job sites on an as-needed basis. The associate safety director will provide comprehensive inspections in a thorough, cost-effective manner. (This service can be used as much or as little as you need.) We at AGC-GM understand your safety needs and we are prepared to satisfy them.

AGC-GM / Milwaukee Builders Exchange provides first-class service

The ABC Wisconsin Web page offers a direct link to the TryTools Web site, established by ABC National. The more than 250-page youth-oriented Web site was designed to help the nation's education community answer questions students may have on careers in the construction industry. Students can access apprenticeship or college construction-management training programs or receive information on how to get into construction, acquire training and progress up a career path.
