About
the Milwaukee Urban League
Established
in 1919, the Milwaukee Urban League is dedicated to providing
services, research and advocacy for African-Americans and other
minorities to build socially and economically equal communities.
With strong
roots in the Milwaukee community, the Urban League operates eight
programs dealing with issues related to employment, youth, family
services and economic development.
What
is MCIP?
The Minority
Contractors Involvement Project is coordinated by the Milwaukee
Urban League and offers an exciting range of opportunities for
new and experienced construction contractors. From learning how
to read blueprints to improving your bidding and negotiation
skills, the project provides a variety of technical and management
assistance.
How
can I participate in the program?
To participate,
call the Milwaukee Urban League. Our counselors will set up an
appointment and determine how we can best help you advance your
goals. Call today.
How
much does it cost to use MCIP?
There
is no cost to participate in the program or to use the services
offered through it. The project is funded, in part, by the city
of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County Community Development Block Grant
Program and the Wisconsin Department of Commerce.
What
services are provided?
By participating
in the project, you can improve your existing business skills
or get started in the construction industry. Assistance is delivered
mainly through training, seminars and one-on-one coaching with
industry experts.
Services
include:
- Business
planning. Now that you've decided to start the business, we'll
provide you with an outline for a business plan to help you set
your goals and focus your priorities.
- Contract
procurement. We provide technical assistance in bidding, estimating
and pricing to construction contractors. This service helps you
build the management infrastructure needed to be competitive
by teaching you how to successfully bid and perform government
or private-sector projects.
- Plans
and specification. When you're ready, we make available the plans
and specifications for construction and rehab jobs from city,
county and state government; Milwaukee Public Schools; other
municipalities; and some private-sector projects.
What's
covered in the seminars and training sessions?
The project
provides useful information and practical tools to help strengthen
your business and knowledge of the construction industry.
Here are
a few of the topics covered and seminars scheduled:
- Negotiation
- "Beware of Hidden Contract Clauses," "How to
Negotiate Equal Terms" and "Avoid Giving Away Your
Rights"
