Purpose
WUCA was
established in February 1937 and represents approximately 200
companies involved in water, sewer, tunnel, utility and related
services. A listing of our members together with recent newsletters
showing industry promotion, legislation, specifications, collective
bargaining, charitable fund-raising and safety seminars are available
through our newsletters on our Web
site. WUCA is the only trade association that truly represents
the interests of the underground contracting industry in Wisconsin.
Association
Activities
WUCA was
successful in lobbying for a change in Wisconsin's One Call legislation
to require all overhead and underground utilities to join Wisconsin
Diggers Hotline.
WUCA has
been active in state hold-harmless legislation as it relates
to construction contracts and has strongly opposed design/build
in the underground contracting industry. Our industry believes
that all tax-funded construction should be competitively bid
free of favoritism.
The association's
industry-improvement program developed and sold thousands of
copies of the publication entitled Standard Specifications for
Water & Sewer Construction in Wisconsin since it was first published
in 1968. The specification committee consists of numerous volunteer
municipal and consulting engineers, contractors, suppliers and
a law firm.
Over the
past 10 years, WUCA members and industry friends have donated
at association events nearly $250,000 to various charities to
include the Ronald McDonald House, Child Abuse Prevention Fund
and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. A WUCA fund-raiser at the Milwaukee
Public Museum last October raised more than $25,000 for the Make-a-Wish
Foundation. A similar event is scheduled at the Mitchell Park
Domes on Sept. 14. These fund-raisers have resulted in two recognition
awards from our national affiliate, the National Utility Contractors
Association.
The association
normally conducts 20 educational, safety or business-related
seminars each year. Since 1988, as many as 12,000 students have
attended WUCA safety seminars on such topics as working safely
in a confined space, competent-person training for trenching
and excavation, trench rescue and first aid/CPR for instructors.
WUCA's
annual out-of-state Midwinter Conference draws from 30 to 300
people, depending on location. Upcoming WUCA events include a
sold-out golf outing at North Hills Country Club in Menomonee
Falls, Fellowship/Family Get-together Nov. 2 in Wauwatosa and
the 2001 Midwinter Conference Feb. 21-24 at the Disney Coronado
Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla.
