As project assistant for R.A. Smith National’s land development services division, Michelle Walz leads the back end of operations.

Walz recently received two awards from Waukesha County Technical College, where she earned her associate degree in the supervisory management program. She won the school’s Program Award, which is given to one student in each of the school’s programs, and was named to the Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges for her outstanding merit and accomplishment as a student.

Before joining R.A. Smith, Brookfield, Walz worked her way from administrative assistant to project manager for Poblocki Sign Co., West Allis.

Now, the 30-year-old is following in the footsteps of her mother, who also worked at R.A. Smith.

Wisconsin Builder’s Burning Questions wanted to know a little bit more about this future back-office leader. We had questions to ask, and, this month, Walz answered them.

What is the definition of success?

To me success means trying. Even if you try and fail you are successful because it’s the determination to try again that’s the hardest part.

What thing on four or more legs scares you the most?

A bear. My husband taught me to hunt when we began dating, and my biggest fear when we are up north hunting is sitting in my blind [I don’t do tree stands] in the early morning hours and having a bear wake up somewhere behind me and not like the idea that I am there.

What food should you resist but can’t?

Tacos. You can put all the chocolate and sweets in front of me, and I have no problem resisting it, but put tacos down, and it’s like I haven’t ever eaten.

Who is the most inspirational person in your life?

My parents. Throughout our lives, my dad always set the bar a little higher and challenged us to try and achieve it. When we did, he would raise the bar again.

I am who I am today because I always wanted to reach that bar and achieve more. My mom never let us give up and always taught us that nothing in life comes easy, and you have to work hard for everything you want.

What is your definition of leadership?

Leadership means coaching and mentoring. It is about empowering employees rather than dictating. It means challenging your employees to figure out a solution when problems occur rather than just fixing the problem.

What skill do you wish you had?

I wish that I could speed read.
