New charges for electricians: Recycle and find efficiency

Current topics of discussion for electrical contractors these days usually include recycling and energy efficiency, said James Conard, chief operating officer for Northern Electric Inc., Green Bay.

In much the same way as rising gas prices affect consumers, those preparing for new construction or renovations are much more conscious about getting the biggest bang for their buck, Conard said. He said Northern Electric’s customers want lighting that balances energy efficiency with proper illumination.

“Energy efficiency in lighting is changing as fast as computers,” Conard said.

“You can own a computer and in three years, it’s an antique. Lighting has become such a changing thing.”

Conard said job-site recycling methods also play a larger role in what electrical contractors do today.

Looking ahead, he said a continued rise in energy prices will boost demand for control systems for everything from lighting to HVAC.
