Plumbers working hard to stayabove water
While business remains steady in the commercial sector, profits for many plumbing contractors are spiraling down the tubes because of a slowdown in residential markets, said Nick Meer, vice president of commercial sales for Alpine Plumbing Inc., Brookfield.
Meer said many plumbers lost their jobs this year as firms looked to tighten belts. As of April, he said, Alpine cut its staff 25 percent from the same time a year ago.
“Business is off that much,” Meer said.
He said a shortage of new projects made bidding competition fierce, and some bids are coming in too low to be profitable. Meer said Alpine took over a contract for another plumbing firm that filed for bankruptcy.
“I haven’t seen this for 25 years,” Meer said of the economy. “It’s been that long since things have been this low.”
Looking ahead, Meer said industry professionals think the earliest the economy will rebound is spring 2009.
